What to Expect
Here's what happens during your visit, so you can come prepared and feel at ease.
Your visit begins with an evaluation of your smell loss, including a review of your history and, when appropriate, smell testing. If PRP is recommended, a small sample of your blood is drawn and spun in a centrifuge to concentrate the platelets and growth factors. This PRP is then carefully applied to the olfactory region high in the nasal cavity after the area is numbed for comfort. The procedure takes about 30–45 minutes total. Most patients tolerate it well and return to normal activities the same day. Because nerve regeneration is gradual, PRP is usually given as a series of treatments spaced several weeks apart, and improvement is tracked over the following months.
