What to Expect
Here's what happens during your visit, so you can come prepared and feel at ease.
Your voice and swallowing evaluation includes a detailed history and high-definition videostroboscopy — a specialized scope that visualizes vocal cord vibration in slow motion. For swallowing complaints, we may perform FEES (a scope passed through the nose to observe swallowing in real time) or arrange a modified barium swallow study. Based on your diagnosis, we develop a care plan that may include medical management, voice rest and hygiene guidance, and referral to a speech-language pathologist for voice therapy. When a condition calls for specialized or surgical treatment, we coordinate a referral to the appropriate specialist.
When to See a Doctor
See our voice specialists if you have hoarseness lasting more than two weeks (especially if you are a smoker), progressive difficulty swallowing, frequent choking on food or liquids, unexplained weight loss from eating difficulties, pain when speaking or swallowing, or if you are a professional voice user experiencing vocal fatigue or loss of range.
